There's a touch of Wicker Man-esque folk horror to this series, which honestly takes a little too long to start getting scary (three episodes, in fact), but it's well worth binging this 7 episode miniseries. Like Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite before it, Squid Game plays on the concept of class division as a catalyst for violence, satirizing reality television by having 456 contestants duke it out in a series of child-friendly games with deadly twists. Given the excited furore that has erupted around the show, though, you probably knew that already. This South Korean drama comes from the mind of director Hwang Dong-hyuk, and follows a group of indebted citizens invited to risk their lives in a mysterious survival game. It was inevitable, wasn’t it? Not only is Squid Game one of the newest shows on Netflix, but it’s also the most successful Netflix original of 2021. Still, if you're interested in seeing how it compares to the anime, it may be worth a look. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the reception to it, Cowboy Bebop has since been canceled by Netflix. However, criticism has been levelled at how soulless it feels, while others have hit out at the new material that's been incorporated. Original composer Yoko Kanno is also back to deliver those jazz-infused earworms to audiences once more.Ĭritical reception has been mixed, with some praising its cast and how closely it sticks to the original narrative. The Witcher doesn't quite feel like 'prestige' TV in the way Game of Thrones tried to be, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And with season 2 uniting him with other fan favorite characters from the novels, the show's second outing is even better than the first. Henry Cavill plays monster hunter Geralt of Rivia in a story that spans decades and wars between nations. If you were disappointed by the end of Game of Thrones, it's a treat. The Witcher is, well, a TV adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's best-selling books, which have also been adapted into a series of popular games.
